Researching Ancillary products: Analysis of digipacks

I will be looking at some digipaks, some of which are students previous work and others which are from actual real artists. All the three digipaks below relate to my music video genre, which is a bit broad, consisting of pop, indie and abit of dubstep.

Analysis 1

This digipak is from a student of last year

I think this digipak is very good as covers all the conventions of ancillary products.
  •  colours complement the album name and artist in terms of genre. In addition the title includes the words 'Red Kisses' therefire they have implemented  a colour which completements the name as kisses are red.
  • The 'three colour rule' has been followed using red white and black. These colours make it look very classy and sophisticated.
  • Everything is in place, as it all seems to link in and therefore connects with each aspect.
  • The font is clear and really goes with the artist and genre.
  • All pictures are in focus
Futhermore they also used a picture where the artists look directly at the camera, this is effective becuase they are new artists and this will help them become recongnised. However on the other hand if they were to use a profule picture where the artist is looking toward one side, this would not have worked effectively becuase the audience may not be able to recongnise the artist since they are still new and up and coming.

However one aspect which i didnt find worked well was the lady at the back, the lighting as well as the focus wasnt very good. this could have been improved. but apart from that one negative point, i am unable to point out any more negative aspects.

  • The artist has also followed the 'three colour rule' using yellow, green and white. These colours work well with eachother and also hold a significance. This is becuase a tree is green and they have followed the this colour throughout the whole digipak
One thing that may not work soo well is the tree on the front panel. the front panel is an area in which the consumers will recongnise the artist. However since the artist is already very well known this may not really matter, although it will affect sales to a certain extent as potential new buyers may not recongnise the artist.

Analysis 3

One aspects which i really like about this particular digipak is the inside left panel and the CD housing. I like how the artist has put one image through both panels. I believe this idea is very effective as it attrats the eyes of the audience, allowing them to get a feel for the life of the artist.

However one aspects which i dont really like about the digipak is the fact that that it doesnt cover all the conventions of ancillary products. This is becuase it does not follow the 'three colour rule' as it consists of more than three colours. It includes the colours brown, white, blue and red. This may not be a good idea for the digipak becuase it may confuse the audience to what subliminal messages the artist is trying to get across. For example if an artist used black and white throughout the whole digipak, this would be effective becuase the audience would know that the album is about darkness and clarity where thing are just black and white.
