Research for Music Video: It's Current State

THE CURRENT STATE
Music in it's current state sees Record Labels distinguished into two different entities.

Mainstream Labels: Large organizations, high production value.
Independent Labels: Often operate niche genres.

The Record Labels still do however own the music  - the aim of many artists is to be signed to a major label for MAXIMUM exposure. The major four record labels have saturated the market and appeal to many different consumers through owning a number of subsidiary labels.

Currently it has been pretty hard for record labels to make the sort of capital they were used to making in the 20th century, with the rise of the internet came the claw of piracy.

In the current situation in the UK, sales of albums have dropped over £100 million over the past two years alone - hard copy sales that is.

In 2008 - £428M compare that to 2009 and 2010's figures of £366M and £319M and you get a stark difference, sales of digital singles however are considerably growing, in 2009 and 2010 - £149.7M and £160M worth of digital singles were sold, showing a change in consumer preference.
