Research for Music Video: Summary of state of music industry 2012

Music Videos previously used to promote the artists latest single with a view to sell the single and ultimately the album to the audience and now do not have such an impact. Well, they still have an impact in promoting the artist however they struggle to have the same impact on record sales. This is because consumers have now found alternative ways of viewing and consuming a song. YouTube means that fans can access the video and song on demand for free, this is a positive for the consumers however the artists themselves may not necessary benefit from this, because many consumers now believe that the video It self is more interesting to watch and listen to through the visual pleasures as oppose to just a song with not video.

The piracy industry is also to blame for the fall in consumption for mp3 music sales which can be purchased through iTunes at around 79p however most people would just illegally download the music for free. This is very convenient for consumers since they can gain access to the music through there home in the form of mp3 format

Although the music video may no longer help sell the album, as I mentioned before it however it still helps promote the artist. The Promoting of the artist still allows them to be successful and wealthy because they can still obtain finances through gigs and advertisements which have really shown to generate a lot of money. Ultimately there has been falling sales and falling profit margins, for instance in 2008 were 428million and have seen drop of a staggering sum of more than 100million and now are only at 319million in 2010.
