Research for music video

Summary of Laura Mulvey ideas on representation;
Laura Mulvey is a British feminist film theorist. She primarily focuses her attention on the inequality that is visual through the representation of women in media. She noted that the sexual inequality among men and women is characterised by superior men and inferior women. In this, a woman tries to meet the expectations of a man in order to meet their fantasy. Mulvey believes that females in order to be notice try to act dress and appear in a certain sexual approach. The main idea is that "looking" is generally seen as an active male role while the passive role of being looked at is immediately adopted as a female characteristic.
The kind of representations that we can expect of a woman in some music videos is that they are

  •  Dumb
  • a gold digger
  • popular
  • weak
  • vulnerable
  • Attention seekers
This kind of representation of women are mostly seen in RNB music videos below are some examples;

Dizzy Rascal dance wiv me;

Akon beautiful;

Although there are many artists/music videos representing females in a passive way, Alicia keys is amongst one of them who is trying to illustrate females in a more active role she tries to present herself like a dominant person in her music videos, In her ‘Superwoman song’, she tries to convey herself as the traditional role of a woman who strives hard to look after her children and provide the best for them who is able to manage several hurdles, Hench which is why she tries to promote females as the true superheroes. The strength of a family.
I believe that Mulveys opinion is still relevant in parts of today’s society as their still is an imbalance approach towards females and males, i believe that it is stronger in certain cultures where women are compelled to being weak and vulnerable which result them in to not receiving their deserved right.
